The Realities of Travel in Cuba:
Cuba is full of history, striking architecture, natural beauty and warm people but it is important to know that it is no ordinary Caribbean island and has its own unique charm. The tourist infrastructure in Cuba remains less developed than in most Latin American countries, which may result in erratic standards of service, outdated or worn hotel facilities, road journeys that can take longer than anticipated and limited or low quality dining options.
In addition, the country is currently undergoing a swift transformation and experiencing unprecedented levels of demand. With many people keen to visit before its essential character changes, the tourist infrastructure is overstretched and the process of booking hotel arrangements is unusually difficult and completely distinct from other destinations that we offer.
A shortage of good quality hotels, combined with baffling government red tape and cases of hotels overbooking their rooms, may lead to last-minute itinerary and accommodation changes that are completely out of our control.
Accommodation may be in casa particulares for some or all of the nights of a holiday. Casa particulares are privately run bed and breakfast-style accommodation and may provide a chance to interact with local families. The term Casa particulares covers a range of different properties, from old colonial buildings to rustic and modern homes, with widely varying standards. Some of the casa particulares do not have names, and are simply referred to by the name of the owners, while others are called ‘hostals’, the Spanish word for a guesthouse, but all are considered to be casa particulares. The properties feature very simple rooms with en suite facilities, and continental breakfast is included. Nova Travel works with a selection of casas however, due to the way in which the casa particular programme operates, specific casas cannot be confirmed in advance.
Nova Travel prides itself on guaranteeing a certain level of service; however, this may not be possible in Cuba for all of the above reasons.
We believe that these difficulties are more than compensated for by Cuba’s unique culture and history but we urge patience and an open mind when planning and embarking on a trip to Cuba. It is an extremely exciting time to visit the island and those with a flexible approach will find a highly rewarding and fascinating country to explore.
